The paper discusses the status of the development status of the inductive power transmission for automotive applications. This technology is, in fact, gaining the interest of electric vehicle manufacturers as an effective strategy to improve the market penetration of electric mobility. Starting from the origin of this technology, the paper presents an overview of the current state-of-the-art as well as the current research and industrial projects. Particular attention is devoted to the description of a prototypal system for the dynamic inductive power transmission whose goal is to extend the battery range by a fast partial recharging during the movement of the vehicle

Energy Analysis in an Italian Opera House and Energy Savings Strategies

The refurbishment of historic buildings is a complex task in which the goal of obtaining a more energy-efficient building can conflict with the peculiar characteristics of the building’s environment and its intended use. In this article, the authors address this problem for a very specific type of building: a historic opera house located in northern Italy. The results of energy consumption monitoring and spot measurements on selected loads were used as a basis to propose energy-savings strategies. The objective of this article is to highlight the difficulties in refurbishing historic buildings, particularly regarding the building envelope, in lieu of proposing a new methodology for measurements or a new strategy for energy savings. It is documented that energy savings are obtainable with relatively small investments and low-impact construction work

Combined harmonic reduction and DC voltage regulation of a single DC source five-level multilevel inverter for wind electric system

Wind power generation has increased in the past twenty years due to the development of power electronic converters. Power generation through wind has advantages over other renewable sources, such as having more efficiency, being pollution-free, and its abundant availability. Power electronic converters play a vital role in the wind energy conversion system. This paper presents a wind-electric system with a permanent magnet synchronous generator, diode rectifier, DC-DC converter (buck-Boost or Cuk converter), and a three-phase five-level inverter. The five-level inverter is a modified form of a cascaded H-bridge inverter that uses a single DC source as an input irrespective of several levels and phases. As the wind speed changes, the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) voltage and frequency changes, but for practical applications, these changes should not be allowed; hence, a voltage controller is used that maintains the output voltage of a DC converter, andthus a constant AC output is obtained. The DClink voltage is maintained at the desired voltage by a Proportional plus Integral (PI)-based voltage controller. The DC link voltage fed to the multilevel inverter (MLI) is converted to AC to feed the load. The MLI is controlled with a new Selected Harmonic Elimination (SHE), which decreases the total harmonic distortion (THD). The system is simulated with an Resistive plus Inductive (RL) load and is tested experimentally with the same load;the results prove that the Cuk converter has a better efficiency compared to the Buck-Boost converter, and the system has less THD when compared with the conventional SHE Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) technique

Survey of DC-DC Non-Isolated Topologies for Unidirectional Power Flow in Fuel Cell Vehicles

The automobile companies are focusing on recent technologies such as growing Hydrogen (H2) and Fuel Cell (FC) Vehicular Power Train (VPT) to improve the Tank-To-Wheel (TTW) efficiency. Benefits, the lower cost, `Eco\u27 friendly, zero-emission and high-power capacity, etc. In the power train of fuel cell vehicles, the DC-DC power converters play a vital role to boost the fuel cell stack voltage. Hence, satisfy the demand of the motor and transmission in the vehicles. Several DC-DC converter topologies have proposed for various vehicular applications like fuel cell, battery, and renewable energy fed hybrid vehicles etc. Most cases, the DC-DC power converters are viable and cost-effective solutions for FC-VPT with reduced size and increased efficiency. This article describes the state-of-the-art in unidirectional non-isolated DC-DC Multistage Power Converter (MPC) topologies for FC-VPT application. The paper presented the comprehensive review, comparison of different topologies and stated the suitability for different vehicular applications. This article also discusses the DC-DC MPC applications more specific to the power train of a small vehicle to large vehicles (bus, trucks etc.). Further, the advantages and disadvantages pointed out with the prominent features for converters. Finally, the classification of the DC-DC converters, its challenges, and applications for FC technology is presented in the review article as state-of-the-art in research

To meet the specifications of low cost, highly reliable electronic devices, fault diagnosis techniques play an essential role. It is vital to find flaws at an early stage in design, components, material, or manufacturing during the initial phase. This review paper attempts to summarize past development and recent advances in the areas about green manufacturing, maintenance, remaining useful life (RUL) prediction, and like. The current state of the art in reliability research for electronic components, mainly includes failure mechanisms, condition monitoring, and residual lifetime evaluation is explored. A critical analysis of reliability studies to identify their relative merits and usefulness of the outcome of these studies' vis-a-vis green manufacturing is presented. The wide array of statistical, empirical, and intelligent tools and techniques used in the literature are then identified and mapped. Finally, the findings are summarized, and the central research gap is highlighted

Implementation of Designed PV Integrated Controlled Converter System

Photovoltaic (PV) energy has increased drastically at an average annual rate of 60% in the last few years. It quickly became an integral part of the power system networks. This increase, in turn, has triggered the evolution of PV power converters with more efficiency and reliability. In this paper, a prototype of the PV integrated controlled converter system is designed, which is applicable in water pumping for irrigation. Main components of this system are floating dual boost converter (FDBC), three-phase voltage source inverter (VSI) and three-phase squirrel cage induction motor (pump). For address the issue of PV voltage fluctuations, a voltage mode controller is designed for the FDBC which regulates the output voltage of the FDBC to a fixed value irrespective of any voltage fluctuations at the PV side

Fast, superfast, and ultra-superfast Intelligent and Smart Charging Solutions for Electric Vehicles

To Promote and meet the projected levels of electric vehicle (EV) penetration, the development of charging infrastructure, i.e., both slow charging and dc-fast charging, is essential. Slow/onboard chargers pose weight, efficiency, and thermal management challenges to the designers, while the off-board fast/superfast/ultra-superfast chargers pose efficiency, power rating, and control challenges. In particular, the installation of dc fast chargers (including fast/superfast/ultra-superfast) is also dictated by the impact on the utility grid and the existing loads. New installation or retrofitting of the existing infrastructure is another significant investment challenge jointly explored by stakeholders, utility companies, and car/charger manufacturers. Another primary concern is battery life management limiting the charging current intake by the EV battery.Scopu
